A Text-Based Game With Infinite Possibilities

The longevity of a story-based game is limited by the imagination of its developers. There can only be so many plot points or events in a game until they’ve all been experienced countless times by players. Though it seems this industry standard is being shaken up by AI Dungeon, a simple yet infinitely long game.

Presented in the form of a classic text-based adventure game, the twist of AI Dungeon is that it allows its players to lead the adventure in any shape that they choose. The AI can adapt to player prompts and form new events based on them, allowing each play-through to be completely different each time. One player might find themselves solving a murder mystery while another would be playing the drums in a band of orcs.

The game was developed by Nick Walton who had been working in a deep learning research lab at Brigham Young University. The deep learning AI was fed a huge library of adventure games as a dataset and uses dream-logic to keep track of its objects and characters in order to form a cohesive story.

It’s somewhat rough around the edges and may occasionally fail to fully understand prompts, but for the most part AI Dungeon offers a fun adventure that’s never quite the same each time. However, its main drawing point is what it could mean for the future of story-based games. The idea of a brand new, AI generated story in every play-through of a game is certainly an exciting one.
