Bill Gates Would Start an AI Company
Bill Gates, as you all know, is the principal founder of Microsoft and boasts an incredible net worth of 103 billion USD. This all started when he dropped out of Harvard after he decided to pursue his dream of starting his own company that focused on computer software. Recently, in an interview at an Economic Club of Washington event, Gates said: “Given my background, I would start an AI company whose goal would be to teach computers how to read, so that they can absorb and understand all the written knowledge of the world.”
This does not come as a surprise as artificial intelligence is an ever-expanding field of computer science that is growing rapidly. The ability to be able to use artificial intelligence in an almost limitless amount of places makes it incredibly versatile and means it can be used to solve almost any problem. Gates saying that he would start an AI company goes to show that he has kept his eye on the modern technology industry that he helped pioneer with the introduction of Microsoft's Windows operating system that took the world by storm.
Gates also has business ventures in the artificial intelligence sector with the latest being his investment in early June 2019 for the AI chip startup Luminous that wants to use light to transfer data. The company raised $9 million in the seed round and they also have investments from Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi.
Microsoft is where Gates says he spends a sixth of his time and they also have an AI platform that provides developers with the tools, such as a Bot Framework or Azure Machine Learning, so that they can "easily and quickly infuse AI into their applications and scenarios, enabling new, intelligent experiences for their users." The Microsoft AI Platform gives developers access to customised computer vision models, custom machine learning and deep learning models and bot building tools.
In the interview, Gates also mentioned an up and coming technology - augmented reality. If you have played Pokémon Go, then you have used augmented reality. Microsoft is deeply invested in this technology due to its HoloLens headset, which you may have seen used for games such as Minecraft, but Gates thinks that there is a lot more you can do with this fascinating technology. When talking about assembling furniture with his daughter, Gates said “I wanted augmented reality to help show me how to put the pieces together properly.”
