Elon Musk calls advanced AI an 'existential threat'.

Elon Musk, the mastermind behind two hugely ambitious but successful companies, Tesla and SpaceX fears the potential AI and deep learning algorithms have.

Elon was asked about his view on AI, the new and upcoming  ‘game changing technology’. The inquisitor asked in a tone that suggested Elon hasn’t fully explored AI yet and may not have even entered the field of artificial intelligence.

‘If I were to guess what our biggest existential threat is… Its probably that [AI]’ - Elon Musk’s comment on AI and its potential

This statement among others suggests that in fact, he is very aware of the potential of AI and what it may soon become. His knowledge of the topic far exceeds an average person. This likely stems from Tesla’s AI-efforts to add a KITT like AI into all their cars. He hired Andrej Karpathy to lead his AI and computer vision team and he must’ve been working closely with his team at Tesla who are responsible for developing the AI algorithms for their self-driving cars.

He ominously awaits an existential crisis with a complete robot takeover. His tweets suggest that the public and the government have no idea how much potential AI holds and how it can be exploited.

Elon Musk tweeted about the risks of advanced AI

Through his tweets, he is making the world more aware of the potential of ‘advanced AI’. He suggests that there is only a 5-10% chance of humans making AI safe. Bot swarms are his main concern as they could be used to manipulate social media. If done on a large enough scale, they could easily trigger international tension and war.

Elon Musk is trying to raise awareness about the potential of AI.

He believes that many people lack education on this topic and are therefore oblivious to the threats it poses. Our realisation might come about a bit too late; AI might’ve already taken over by then. It is important for the government to fully understand this technology works and treat it like a serious threat. Regulations need to be put in place before humans inevitably use the technology for an evil cause and some destructive event occurs.

Another tweet from Elon Musk on the race for AI.

'Once there is awareness, people will be extremely afraid, as they should be...By the time we are reactive in AI regulation, it'll be too late,'- Elon Musk
