How India Is Using Artificial Intelligence to Fight COVID-19

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to soar many countries, many countries have been developing innovative solutions to combat the virus and to help the medical community. In India, startups and previously established technology companies have implemented artificial intelligence.

India is currently the third most virus-hit country with 1,855,331 total cases and 38,971 deaths [worldometers.info/coronavirus], with the number of daily cases rising exponentially since April 09. In an attempt at forecasting the spread of COVID-19 in urban districts, to understand how the pandemic will evolve, digital twins is being used: a digital twin is a form of computerized artificial intelligence that produces a model from real-world data as input to predict the future evolution of the system.

Artificial intelligence is also being used for faster and more effective diagnosis. Many hospitals make use of radiology through X-rays and CT scans to screen patients to monitor the progression of the disease in the lungs. Instead of fully relying of radiologists to for diagnosis, medical startups have quickly repurposed their algorithms for COVID-19. AI models have been used in the field to report over 80,000 X-rays for the government run screening program.

India, like many countries, has made it mandatory to wear a mask upon stepping outside of one’s home, but ensuring people comply with the guidelines is expected to be a major challenge. AI is being used in live CCTV feeds to monitor the Indian population and any violations are instantly reports to safety administrators.

Worldwide, there is a race to develop the first COVID-19 treatment vaccines; India leverages AI simulations to synthesize molecules and discover new drugs to fight the virus. The simulations have already selected 31 molecules that are undergoing clinical trials as potential cures.

Although artificial intelligence may be a stepping stone future success in the fight against COVID, according to AI experts, it’s difficult to trust AI since it cannot explain its predictions.
