Let's Play Speedgate - The Sport Invented By An AI
Speedgate is a new sport that has been created by not a human, but by an AI. This is the latest endeavour into the field of artificial intelligence done by the California based digital agency AKQA. The company wanted to see if they could push the limits of AI by creating one that can make its own sport, and they succeeded.
The AI consists of a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Network (DCGAN), which has been fed data from over 400 different sports. The AI analysed over 7300 rules from these sports, which were then used to create the rules and regulations of Speedgate. The AI output thousands of different ideas and rules for sports, some of which the humans tested and some of which they didn't. For example, underwater parkour was a sport that the AI invented but just didn't make the cut. People tested some of these sports to see if they were easy to learn, fun, accessible to all athletes and physically challenging.
The team at AKQA didn't stop at making sports though. They also went ahead and made the AI make logos for the sports. They used over 10,400 sports logos as test data and got 6,400 back. The AI was also responsible for creating the motto of the sport. The algorithm came up with quite a nice one: "Face the ball to be the ball to be above the ball.” Very inspiring.
